UKC6546 Tensioner
SD1 23/2600 timing belt tensioners. For some time now these have been difficult if not impossible to get hold of. This tensioner is not serviceable due to it's construction and replacement bearing assembly's are not available. Remanufacturing is not viable due to the small/unknown number required? As far as I know Rimmers have no plans to investigate a suitable solution. As I have done in the past with other non available parts? have decided to find a solution to this problem myself. I have searched for a tensioner with similar fitting to reduce difficulties with fitting. After looking at many and testing some, have found one with a roller that is a very close match that will fit. I have included pictures of the two tensioners The SD1 on the left and the ford on the right. Also a view of one fitted to my 2600, the tensioner needed is from the Ford OHC range of engines used in a number of models including the Capri. The part number is:1496915 these should be available from motor factors or Ford agents they can also be found on eBay at around £30 including postage. The ford tensioner hole fixings are the same, notice the ford tensioner roller will contact the belt lower down but will only changes the belt path slightly. Unlike the rover tensioner the ford roller is closer to the plate making spacers necessary as well as a capless bolt on the lower fixing to provide sufficient belt clearance. You can see how the Ford tensioner is fitted in the large picture below. I can if needed supply the necessary longer bolts and spacers as a kit. I have run my 2600 with this tensioner for about 200 miles so far without problems? In the picture the roller looks very close to the alternator bracket in fact the gap is about 3/8th of an inch the cam drive cover will still fit OK. Please note during my searches I have come across others claiming a solution for this tensioner at astronomic prices so beware. For more details on fitting the ford tensioner or fitting kits please email me.
